AlterEgo is a MailChimp app designed to add two-factor authentication to your account. Integrating AlterEgo with MailChimp helps keep your data safe by providing an additional layer of security that must be breached before an attacker can access your account. Because we feel so strongly about security, we also offer a 10% discount for MailChimp accounts where all Owner and Admin logins are connected to AlterEgo.

In this article, we walk you through how to create an AlterEgo account, integrate AlterEgo with MailChimp, set AlterEgo requirements for other account users, and disconnect the AlterEgo integration.

In this article:

About AlterEgo

Once the integration is set, each time you enter your MailChimp username and password, you must meet one of the following conditions before you are granted access to the MailChimp account:

  • Provide a randomly generated passcode from your AlterEgo account

  • Answer a text challenge to your cell phone

  • Respond to a push notification in the AlterEgo app on your smartphone

Along with AlterEgo integrations with a few other apps, we also provide a free-to-use AlterEgo API for any developers looking to add two-factor authentication to their apps.

Create an AlterEgo Account

  1. Sign up for an AlterEgo account. Be sure you use a username and password that is different from what you use for your MailChimp account to increase the security of your accounts.

When you log in to MailChimp going forward, you are prompted for AlterEgo authentication before you can proceed into the MailChimp account. You can also choose to login with your phone.

We strongly recommend you access AlterEgo from a completely separate device, such as your cell phone. You can download the AlterEgo app for Apple iOS and Android devices.

AlterEgo with Multi-user MailChimp Accounts

If you're currently the Owner or Admin of a MailChimp account, you have the ability to invite other users to the account and assign their login with a specific level of access. Check out this article for full details on using MailChimp's multi-user accounts feature. In addition to assigning a level of access, you can also make AlterEgo a requirement for other users to log in to your account. To set or change the AlterEgo requirements in your account for other users, follow the steps below.

  1. Click your profile name to open the Account Panel and choose Account.
  2. Click the Account settings drop-down menu and choose Account Security.
    Account security tab
  3. Scroll down the Account security page to find the AlterEgo settings.
  4. Set the AlterEgo requirements you'd like, then click the Update button to save your changes.

If you make AlterEgo a requirement, users can use an existing AlterEgo account with their login or create a new AlterEgo account if they don't already have one set up.

Disconnect AlterEgo

We strongly recommend using AlterEgo with MailChimp, but allow you to disable the integration if you need to. To disconnect AlterEgo from your MailChimp login, follow the steps below.

  1. Click your profile name to open the Account Panel.
  2. Click the Account tab.
    Account Panel
  3. Click the Account settings drop-down menu and select Account security.
  4. Scroll down to the AlterEgo authentication section and click the Disconnect AlterEgo link.

After clicking the link, a success message displays indicating AlterEgo has been disconnected for this MailChimp profile. Once disconnected, the account no longer receives the 10% discount unless the integration is re-enabled.

  • While we don't charge for SMS notifications, your wireless provider may have their own charges associated with receiving texts.
