AlterEgo is a MailChimp application that adds two-factor authentication to your account to keep your data safe. Because we feel so strongly about security, we offer a 10% discount for MailChimp accounts where all Owner and Admin logins are connected to AlterEgo.

Below, you'll learn how to create an AlterEgo account, integrate AlterEgo with MailChimp, set AlterEgo requirements for other account users, and disconnect the AlterEgo integration.

About AlterEgo

Once the integration is set, you must meet one of the following conditions each time you enter your MailChimp username and password before you are granted access to the MailChimp account.

  • Provide a randomly generated passcode from your AlterEgo account
  • Answer a text challenge to your cell phone
  • Respond to a push notification in the AlterEgo application on your smartphone

We also provide a free-to-use AlterEgo API for any developers looking to add two-factor authentication to their applications.

Create an AlterEgo Account

  1. Sign up for an AlterEgo account. Use a username and password that is different from what you use for your MailChimp account to increase the security of your accounts.

AlterEgo with Multi-user MailChimp Accounts

If you're currently the Owner or Admin of a MailChimp account, you can invite other users to the account and assign their login with a specific level of access. You can also require other users to log in to the account with AlterEgo. To set or change the AlterEgo requirements in your account for other users, follow the steps below.

  1. Click your profile name to open the Account Panel, and click the Account tab.
  2. Click the Account settings drop-down menu and choose Account security.
Select Account security from the Account settings drop-down menu.
  3. Scroll down to the AlterEgo settings.

Set the AlterEgo requirements you'd like, and then click the Update button to save those changes.

If you make AlterEgo a requirement, users can use an existing AlterEgo account with their login or create a new AlterEgo account if they don't already have one set up.

Disconnect AlterEgo

We strongly recommend using AlterEgo with MailChimp, but allow you to disable the integration if you need to. To disconnect AlterEgo from your MailChimp login, follow the steps below.

  1. Click your profile name to open the Account Panel.
  2. Click the Account tab if you are an Admin or Manager, or the My Profile tab if you're an Author or Viewer.
  3. Scroll down to the AlterEgo authentication section and click the Disconnect AlterEgo link.

After clicking the link, a success message displays that indicates AlterEgo has been disconnected for this MailChimp profile. Once disconnected, the account no longer receives the 10% discount unless the integration is re-enabled.

  • While we don't charge for SMS notifications, your wireless provider may have their own charges associated with receiving texts.
  • If you are unable to log in to your AlterEgo account, use the forgot password link or contact our support chimps.
