Some of us musicians and artists are lucky enough to have a day job at MailChimp and we understand your privacy concerns as an artist. You definitely don't want rabid fans circling your house and bugging your family or removing your precious 1979 Gibson Thunderbird bass from your practice space. But CAN-SPAM requires that all emails include the sender's valid physical postal address, so what do you do?
Well here are a few suggestions for you! Please keep in mind that these are just suggestions and may for one reason or another be inappropriate in your particular case. Because of this we recommend speaking with a professional familiar in the area if you have any specific questions about whether your proposed solution fits CAN-SPAM's valid physical postal address requirement.
Musicians/Bands
- Do you have a manager or a lawyer or representation of some kind? They may have a PO Box where you can receive mail and may allow you to use their address as your address.
- If you practice at a rehearsal studio and they accept mail on behalf of bands, you can use the main address of your practice space.
- Are you an artist in residence at a club? If they can accept mail for you, you may be be able to use the club's address on your campaigns.
- Do you teach guitar lessons at a local music store? If you receive mail at the store, you may be able to use the store's address.
Artists/Crafters
- Do you have a manager or a lawyer or representation of some kind? They may have a PO Box where you can receive mail and may allow you to use their address as your address.
- Do you have a collective artist's studio you work in? If you can receive mail at the studio, you can use the main studio address to meet CAN-SPAM requirements.
- Are you affiliated with a gallery or a retail store? If they will receive mail for you, you may be able to use that address on your campaigns.
This info goes for writers, bloggers, and other creative people who do not have a physical address they feel comfortable sharing with all their recipients. Sometimes the only answer is to purchase a PO Box, but we hope we've given you some possible alternatives to be able to use MailChimp for your creative project. Remember whatever address you use needs to be accurate and reliable.
