When someone clicks the unsubscribe link in your campaign, MailChimp assumes he never wants to hear from you again. So, we permanently remove him from your list, and we don't allow you (the list owner) to add him back.
If one of your recipients accidentally clicked the unsubscribe link, or forwarded their copy of a campaign and someone else clicked the link, there are two ways they can be added back to your list:
- To ensure they really do want to be back on your list (and to protect you from false accusations of abuse), they can resubscribe to your list and go through the double opt-in process. If you have unsubscribe confirmation emails enabled for your list (they're on by default), there's a link to resubscribe in that email. Or, you can send them a link to your signup form to opt in again.
- You can search for and delete their address from the list, and then manually add them back.
- Go to Lists > View list > View all subscribers.
- Choose unsubscribed from the drop down menu.
- Click view for the email address.
- Select the delete button to delete the subscriber from your list entirely.
- Click add people to add the subscriber back to your list.
When someone unsubscribes from your list, MailChimp sends them a email confirming that they were removed from your list by default. The confirmation also includes a link to resubscribe, in case they were accidentally unsubscribed. You can turn this email confirmation off in your list settings. Go to Lists > settings > list name and defaults and below send unsubscribe notifications to your subscribers?, uncheck the box.
