When you use our templates, you'll notice some merge tags in the footer. We populate these tags from the information you set up for each of your lists. Whatever information you have set up for the list you have attached to your campaign on the Recipients step will be the info that gets pulled into your footer.
Here's what the default merge tags are used for:
- The U.S. and UK (and more and more countries, nowadays) anti-spam laws now require that all marketing emails contain your contact information.
- When you set up a list in MailChimp, there's a step in the setup wizard where we ask you to supply your list's contact information (in case of abuse complaints, etc).
- We'll automatically insert the information that you provided in that step into every email campaign you send, wherever these tags are present (you can edit the wording around them, but you probably shouldn't ever remove them).
- The information that we replace these tags with can be changed under Lists > settings > "Required Email Footer Content". You can also click on the edit contact info button in the footer of each campaign to change the info directly from the Campaign Builder.
Merge Tag Descriptions
- *|UNSUB|*
- Gives your recipients the opportunity leave your list. (Required by law and our Terms of Use.)
- *|LIST:DESCRIPTION|*
- We'll insert the "how did you get my email address!?!?" information that you provided in the list setup wizard. This is always a good tag to use, because people forget signing up for emails all the time. If you don't remind them, they might report you as a spammer to their ISP, who may block all your future emails.
- *|EMAIL|*
- We'll insert each recipient's email address here. So, you'll probably see this in the unsubscribe link. This lets people know which email address they'll be removing from your list if they click (comes in handy if the recipient signed up with multiple addresses to your list). You don't need to replace this tag with YOUR email address.
- *|HTML:LIST_ADDRESS_HTML|*
- We'll pull in your mailing address. (Required by the Can-Spam act)
- *|HTML:LIST_ADDRESS_VCARD|*
- We'll add an "Add us to your address book" link that points to the vcard (.vcf) file with your address details.
- *|UPDATE_PROFILE|*
- Gives your recipients the opportunity to change their profile information.
- *|IF:REWARDS|*
- We'll only show the *|REWARDS|* merge tag if you're on a free account or if you have MonkeyRewards turned on for this campaign.
Other Available Merge Tags
- *|LIST:ADDRESS|*
- We'll insert your company's postal mailing address or PO Box. (Required by law and our Terms of Use.)
- *|LIST:PHONE|*
- We'll insert your company's phone number.
- *|LIST:COMPANY|*
- We'll insert your company's name.
- *|FORWARD|*
- We'll insert the URL to your list's "forward this campaign to a friend" page.
- *|IFNOT:ARCHIVE_PAGE|*
- Shows up before your address information. Hides your CAN-SPAM info, specifically your Permission Reminder and Address, when someone views the email as an archive page. At that point, it's no longer an email so CAN-SPAM info is unnecessary. We respect your privacy. So, by default, we hide your contact info on your archives.
You can remove the tags that hide your contact info if you want to display the information on your archives. Just simply delete the beginning and end *|IFNOT:ARCHIVE_PAGE|* and *|END:IF|* tags from your content like you would any other text.

The view in browser pre-header link will also be hidden in your archives since archives are already viewed in the browser. We don't want the archive to be confusing and redundant.
