Customize Your Campaign Footer
- Updated: Jun 28, 2016
This feature requires Author user level or higher.
Footers can be customized just like any other part of your campaign. Style the default MailChimp footer with our tools or replace the default footer with a custom footer that matches your website or company style. Be sure to fill out your required footer content, too.
Access Footer Styles
Footer edits can be made in the Campaign Builder or the Template Builder.
- Open the campaign you want to edit in either the Campaign Builder or Template Builder.
- Click the Design tab.

- Click Footer to display options.

Three sections appear in the editing pane, Footer Style, Footer Text, and Footer Link. Some templates have slightly different options in these sections.
Under Footer Style, edit things like background and border colors. Use the Footer Text section to set font styles, colors, alignment, spacing, and size. To emphasize links in your footer, change the font color and font weight in the Footer Links section.

Customizing Footer Content
The text in your footers can be edited in the footer content block. Click the Footer content block in your campaign to open the editing pane. Type whatever footer information you want to include, or make adjustments to the content that's already there.
Required content
Some things are required under the CAN-SPAM Act (and similar laws in countries other than the United States). They're also required under our Terms of Use.
-
Unsubscribe link
An unsubscribe link using the *|UNSUB|* merge tag allows people to easily unsubscribe from your list. You MUST use the merge tag we provide to automatically generate the link. -
Your physical address.
Sorry, this can't be an email address or website address. A post office box will work, though. The default footer in MailChimp templates uses an HTML address merge tag.*|HTML:LIST_ADDRESS_HTML|*
You can edit the address for your list at any time.
To layout the address differently or to remove "Add us to your address book", manually type in your address, or use the *|LIST_ADDRESS|* merge tag to pull only the address into the footer.
To show only the "Add us to your address book" link, use the *|LIST:ADDRESS_VCARD|* merge tag.
-
MonkeyRewards
A MonkeyRewards badge is required on all Forever Free accounts. Use the *|REWARDS|* merge tag to place the MailChimp badge in your footer. We incorporate a conditional statement statement in our default footer using *|IF:REWARDS|* so the Rewards badge displays only if the sender is a free account or has turned on the rewards badge. If you want to use this in your own template or campaign, here's what to add:*|IF:REWARDS|* *|REWARDS|* *|END:IF|*
Suggested Footer Items
These aren't strictly required, but we recommend that you make this information available in your footer.
- Permission reminder
This reminder lets people know how they got on the list. Use the *|LIST:DESCRIPTION|* merge tag to automatically pull the permission reminder from your list settings. - Subscriber's email address
Including this tells the subscriber what email address is on the list, which can be useful if a campaign is forwarded in an email client. Use the *|EMAIL|* merge tag to pull that into your campaign. -
Update profile link
Use the *|UPDATE_PROFILE|* merge tag to add a subscriber-specific link where they can update their profile. -
Copyright year
Use the *|CURRENT:YEAR|* merge tag to automatically update your copyright notice by default. To display a different, static, year, completely delete the *|CURRENT:YEAR|* merge tag and insert the year you want to appear instead.
Want more automatic content?
Merge tags are available for a lot of other information about your list. We have a list of merge tags for footers to help you customize your footer even more!
Custom Code Your Footer
Do you have a custom footer that you or your designer created? Open the editing pane for the footer in your campaign, and click the <> Source icon. Paste in your code, and click Save & Close to see your handiwork.
