How to Remove Subscribers

This feature requires Manager user level or higher.

There are a few different ways to delete a list or clear subscribers. Below, you'll learn four ways to remove subscribers so you can determine which option works best for you.

Before You Start

  • Decide whether you want to delete a subscriber, or unsubscribe them. Unsubscribed addresses are still searchable in your account but will no longer receive campaigns. Deleted addresses are completely removed from your account. We don’t block previously deleted addresses from being imported back to your list, so delete with caution.

  • We track subscriber activity in your list each time you send a campaign. Most campaign activity takes place in the first week after a send, so we prohibit performing list actions within seven days of sending any type of campaign, including RSS and Automations. During the seven-day period after any campaign is sent, you won't be able to copy, move, delete, or otherwise perform bulk actions on the subscribers in your list you sent to. These options are re-enabled on the eighth day.
  • We encourage you to export your lists before you perform any bulk actions. For list data integrity and security reasons, MailChimp doesn't maintain backups for deleted lists and missing data can't be recovered.

Delete an Entire List

When you delete an entire list, you delete subscribers, unsubscribed and cleaned addresses, list settings, signup forms, and list-specific reports. This action is permanent. Deleted data cannot be recovered.

To delete an entire list, follow the steps below.

  1. Navigate to the Lists page.
  2. Check the box for the list you want to delete.
  3. Click Delete.
  4. In the Are you sure? pop-up modal, type DELETE in all caps and click Delete.

Delete One or More Subscribers

When you need to remove a few subscribers, decide whether you want to delete them yourself or unsubscribe them. Deleted subscribers can be added back to your list, so if you need to make sure a subscriber isn't accidentally re-added, unsubscribe them instead.
