About Advanced Segmentation

Pro Feature

This is part of paid features.

MailChimp Pro includes an Advanced Segmentation tool for lists that takes our standard segmentation tools to the next level. Advanced Segmentation allows you to create complex segments that combine both any and all logic in a single segment. Use advanced segments to create complex segments that can precisely target your campaign content to specific subscriber sets.

Advanced Segmentation is included with MailChimp Pro, which is available to add on to any pricing plan.

How Advanced List Segments Work

Advanced list segments are similar to regular list segments, and use the same segmenting tool as Comparative Reporting segments. Like segments you add to Comparative Reports, you'll find more options and depth to the segments you can create with advanced segments than in regular list segmentation. If you don't have a need for complex segmentation,  create a regular list segment.

Things to Know

Here are a few things to note about advanced segmentation.

  • Be aware that advanced list segments do not automatically update as subscribers meet your conditions. You’ll need to manually refresh your advanced segments.
  • Advanced segments don't take blank fields into consideration like regular segments do. For example, if you wanted to pull subscribers who do not live in the state of Georgia, the system would return subscribers who had a value other than Georgia in the state field, but would not return subscribers with no value in the state field.

About Conditions and Groups of Conditions

Like in regular list segmentation, you'll use conditions to sort your subscribers. Advanced segments let you combine individual conditions into groups of conditions to create nested, complex segments that allow you to use both any and all logic in a single segment. As you add conditions, you can refresh the subscriber count to see how many people on your list fit your segment criteria.

About Any and All Logic

For each group of conditions, you'll have the option to add multiple individual conditions, and choose whether to use any or all logic for each set. The any and all logic for the top-level group applies to all subsequent groups in that segment. This is an important distinction to consider, because with traditional list segments, each condition is weighted equally.

Here's some more information to help you determine when to use any or all for your top-level group.

When to Use Any

Use any for the top-level group in your segment when you want to combine subscribers who fulfill any of your groups of conditions. You can think of any logic as meaning "or."

For example, if you’re a university that wants to send an invite to a mixer that will go to new freshmen or students who’ve been at the school for at least two years, you’d want to create a segment that uses any logic.

For the top-level group, you would use any, and filter by Freshmen as the first condition. The second group of conditions would use all logic and filter by Juniors and Seniors who were added to the list more than two years ago.

When to Use All

Use all to find subscribers who meet a combination of all your condition groups. You can think of all logic as meaning "and."

For example, if you’re a university who wants to send a campaign to students who have purchased student athletic tickets and have a high member rating, you’d want to create a segment that uses all logic.

For the top-level group, you’d use all and filter by students for the first condition. The second group of conditions would use any logic and include a condition for purchase activity and a condition for member rating.

Segmentation Options

Advanced Segmentation options are slightly different than regular list segmentation, so the uses and combinations may vary also.

The options appear based on the data available in the list you're working with.

  • E-commerce Purchase and Goal Activity
If you have your online store or Goal integrated with your account, you can segment based on subscriber purchase or Goal activity.
  • Subscriber Data
Segment by subscriber-specific data, including email address, email client, VIP information, language, date added, information changes, member rating, and signup source.
  • Campaign Activity
Segment based on your subscribers' campaign activity, including sent, opened, and clicked activity.
  • List Fields
Segment based on the list fields in your list, such as a subscriber's first or last name, their birthday, or group preferences.
  • Groups
Segment based on existing groups in your list.
  • Subscriber Segments
Segment based on existing static subscriber segments in your list.
  • Predicted Demographics
Segment based on gender and age range of subscribers in your list.
