Upload, Add, and Edit Images in Campaigns

MailChimp makes it easy to upload and edit images in your account, so you can customize the look of your campaign.

In this article, you'll learn how to upload and edit images in a campaign.

Before You Start

  • Image requirements vary by template. For more information, take a look at our image requirements.
  • Our Themes templates are predesigned, so some images and content blocks can't be changed.
  • When you upload an image to the Content Manager, we change the file name to a unique identifier that can't be duplicated or changed.
  • The Content Manager supports JPG, JPE, JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP image files.

Find Image URLs

Sometimes you need the source URL for an image in your Content Manager. For example, when you want to embed an image or link to a file in a Code Your Own template.

To copy an item URL, follow these steps.

  1. Navigate to the Content Manager.
  2. In the sidebar, click the tab that contains your file.
  3. Click the file you want to work with.
  4. Click the drop-down menu next to View Details, and choose Copy URL. We'll save it to your clipboard.

  5. Click X in the upper-right corner.
  6. Paste the copied URL into the Code Editor, or wherever you need it.

Insert an Image

The steps to insert images in the Campaign Builder vary slightly, depending on the type of content block you're using.

Insert into an Image Content Block

The Campaign Builder offers a few types of image-based content blocks, including Image, Image Card, Image Group, and Image + Caption. These instructions explain how to use images with any of these types.

To insert an image into an image content block, follow these steps.

  1. Navigate to the Design step in the Campaign Builder.

  2. Click the image content block you want to work with.

  3. Click Browse to open the Content Manager.

  4. in the sidebar, click the tab that contains your image.

  5. Click the image you want to work with.
    Cursor clicks the image.

  6. Click Insert.
    Cursor clicks insert.

  7. Click Save & Close.

All done!

Insert into a Text Content Block

The Campaign Builder offers a few types of text-based content blocks, including Text, Boxed Text, and Footer. These instructions explain how to use images with any of these types.

To insert an image into a text content block, follow these steps.

  1. Navigate to the Design step in the Campaign Builder.
  2. Click the content block you want to work with.
  3. In the editing pane, click the Content Manager icon in the text content block toolbar.
  4. Click the image you want to work with.
    Cursor clicks insert.
  5. Click Insert.

  6. In the Edit Image screen, set optional image properties or add a URL to make the image a link.
    Cursor clicks save & insert image.
  7. Click Save & Insert Image.
     

Upload an Image

When you upload an image, we save that file on our server—this is also known as hosting. The steps to upload images to the Campaign Builder vary slightly, depending on the type of content block you're using.

Upload into an Image Content Block

The Campaign Builder offers a few types of image-based content blocks, including Image, Image Card, Image Group, and Image + Caption. These instructions explain how to use images with any of these types.

To upload an image to one of these content blocks, follow these steps.

  1. Navigate to the Design step of the Campaign Builder.
  2. Click an image content block or drag and drop a new image content block type into your layout.
  3. Click Browse to open the Content Manager.
  4. Choose how to import your image.
    • To choose a file from your computer, click Upload, find the file you want, and click Open.
    • To use an image that's saved online, click the drop-down menu next to Upload, and choose Import from URL. Input the URL, and click Import.

  5. Click Save & Close.

After you insert your image, you can customize the settings on your image content block, add alt text, go back to the Content Manager to edit the image, or replace or remove it.

Drag and Drop an Image

Here's a shortcut! If your images are named and formatted correctly on your computer already, you can drag and drop them straight into MailChimp.

Drag and drop a single image into an image content block, or open the Content Manager and drag a few images to upload in batches.

Upload into a Text Content Block

The Campaign Builder offers a few types of text-based content blocks, including Text, Boxed Text, and Footer content blocks. These instructions explain how to use images with any of these types.

To upload an image to a text content block, follow these steps.

  1. Navigate to the Design step of the Campaign Builder.
  2. Click the text block you want to work with, or drag and drop a new text content block type into your layout.
  3. In the editing pane, click the Content Manager icon in the toolbar.
    Click Content Manager icon.
  4. Choose how to import your image.
    • To choose a file from your computer, click Upload, find the file you want, and click Open.
    • To use an image that's saved online, click the drop-down menu next to Upload, and choose Import from URL. Input the URL, and click Import.

  5. In the Edit Image screen, set optional image properties or add a URL to make the image a link.
    Cursor clicks save & insert image.
  6. If you reduce the image height and width, click Use Image URL to link to the original image so recipients can click the image to view it at its original size.
  7. Click Save & Insert Image.

If you need to make additional changes to the image settings later, double-click the image in the text block.

 

Edit an Image

MailChimp's Content Manager includes a built-in Photo Editor with version history. To get started, you'll need to access the Photo Editor. The steps to get there are a little different, depending on what type of content block you're using.

About the Photo Editor

The Photo Editor offers many editing tools, from necessary image cropping and orientation settings to photo filters, stickers, and meme font overlays. These options are available along the top of the Photo Editor screen, and each tool has its own settings.

Edit from an Image Block

To edit an image from an image content block, follow these steps.

  1. Navigate to the Design step of the Campaign Builder.

  2. Click the image content block that you want to work with.

  3. In the editing pane, click Edit.
    Cursor clicks edit.

  4. In the Photo Editor, click any of the editing tool icons to open that tool's settings, and make your choices.

  5. Click Apply and repeat as needed for each tool.

  6. Click Save.

  7. Click Save & Close.

Easy! We'll replace the image in your campaign with the new, edited version.

Edit from a Text Block

To edit an image from a text content block, follow these steps.

  1. Navigate to the Design step in the Campaign Builder.
  2. Open the text content block that you want to work with.
  3. In the editing pane, double-click the image.
  4. In the Edit Image screen, click Edit with Photo Editor.
    Cursor clicks edit with photo editor.
  5. In the Photo Editor, click any of the editing tool icons to open that tool's settings, and make your selections.

  6. Click Apply and repeat as needed for each tool.
  7. Click Save.
  8. With the image selected, click Insert.
    Cursor clicks insert.
  9. Click Save & Insert Image.

Nice work! We'll replace the image in your campaign with the new, edited version.

Use Another Version

The Content Manager saves versions of your images when you make edits. If you've edited and saved an image in the past and want to use another version of your image, you can!

To use another version of an image, follow these steps.

  1. In the Content Manager, click the image you want to work with.
  2. Click View Details.
  3. Under Revision History, click the image version you want to insert.
    Cursor clicks the image.
  4. Click Insert.
