Use the Content Manager

Our Content Manager makes it easy to organize files, images, documents, and product images in MailChimp, so you can quickly share content with your audience and sell more stuff.

About the Content Manager

The Content Manager is a place to store uploaded images, documents, and other files you include or link to in your campaigns, templates, or signup forms. Use it to import files, edit images, and create folders to sort and filter your content. In addition to storing uploaded files, the Content Manager also allows you to access product images from your connected stores and Giphy's searchable GIF library.

Each file stored in the Content Manager includes a file details page, where you can edit an image, copy the file URL, and insert the file in a campaign. You can also rename a file or download it to your computer.

In the Content Manager you'll see different tabs that contain your content. Click each tab to access your files, images, and documents.

  • My Files
    Contains images, documents, or files you uploaded to the Content Manager.
  • Products
    Contains product images from your connected stores.
  • Giphy
    Contains a searchable Giphy library, and recent GIFs.

Where to Access the Content Manager

The quickest way to access the Content Manager is from the Templates page in your account.

To access the Content Manager, follow these steps.

  1. Navigate to the Templates page.
  2. Click Content Manager.
    Cursor clicks Content Manager button.

After you open the Content Manager, you'll be able to edit and sort existing files, or upload new files.

Here are a few other places to access the Content Manager.

  • When you edit a Text content block in the Campaign Builder or Template Builder
    Select the Content Manager icon in the toolbar
  • When you edit an Image content block in the Campaign Builder or Template Builder
    Click Browse to access the Content Manager in image-type content blocks
  • At the bottom of the Code Your Own editor, inside the Campaign Builder

Upload or Import Files

You can upload images to the Content Manager from several locations in your account. Inside the Content Manager, you can also import an image file from a URL, or choose a GIF from Giphy. You can link images or files in your campaigns, and we'll track the clicks in the campaign report so you can see who downloaded the file.

When a file is uploaded to the Content Manager, we change the file name to a unique identification number, which can't be changed. Renaming the file in the Content Manager does not change the identification number when it is downloaded.  

In addition to images, we're able to host a variety of file types, as long as they're under 10MB in size.

Copy an Image URL

If you create custom HTML templates in our Code Editor and want to embed an image or link to a file, you'll need the URL for that item.

To copy an item URL, follow these steps.

  1. From the Code Editor, click Content Manager.
  2. Click the tab that contains your file.
  3. Click the file you want to work with.
  4. In the Content Manager toolbar, click the drop-down menu next to View Details, and choose Copy URL.
  5. Click X in the upper-right corner to return to the Code Editor.
  6. Paste the copied URL into the Code Editor.

Add Files into Folders

You can organize the items in the Content Manager with folders. Create or delete folders, move batches of files to a folder, or move individual files from folder to folder.

To add a file to a folder, follow these steps.

  1. Navigate to the Content Manager.
  2. Click each file you want to move into a folder.
  3. Click the Move To drop-down menu at the top of the page and click the folder where you want the files to go. We'll automatically move each file to the folder you choose.
    • If you need to add a new folder, click Add Folder in the Move To drop-down menu. Type in a new folder name and click Add Folder or press Enter on your keyboard.

That's it! Now you can find your files in the folder you chose or created. Open a folder to further edit, filter, or sort your files. To return to My Files, click X in the filter settings block.

Search, Sort, and Filter Files

In MailChimp's Content Manager you can search, sort, or filter your files to find the one you need.

Search

Type a term into the search bar at the top of the screen and press Enter on your keyboard or click the Search icon.

Sort

Use the Sort By drop-down menu to organize by date created, name, or size. Click the arrow button to organize files in ascending or descending order.

Filter

Filter options include Uploader, Content type, and Folder.

  • Click Uploader to choose a user on the account, and display only files that user has uploaded.
  • Click Folder to choose to display content in a specific folder.
  • Click Content type to filter by content type, like image, video, or spreadsheet.

Delete Files

If you no longer want to store a file in the MailChimp Content Manager, you can delete a single file or several at once. File deletion won't affect the display of sent campaigns or archive pages, and can take 24–48 hours to disappear from the Content Manager.

To delete a file, follow these steps.  

  1. Navigate to the Content Manager.
  2. Click the tab that contains your file.
  3. Click the files you want to delete.
  4. Click Delete in the toolbar at the top of the Content Manager.
  5. To confirm, click Delete in the Are you sure? pop-up modal. If you aren't ready to delete the files, click Cancel.

Change Views

You can change the Content Manager's layout to show a tile view or a list view. Click the corresponding icon to switch between the two views.

Use the View drop-down menu on the lower-right of the Content Manager to choose the number of files you want to display.

Used along with filtering and sorting, changing views can help you quickly scan for the files you need.
