In MailChimp you can create a segment to target specific subscribers in your list. The segments you create can be used to send targeted campaigns as well as saved for future use in your account. You also can use a saved segment to discover similar subscribers within your list. Below we walk you through the different ways to save segments in a MailChimp list. We also show you how to view, edit, and delete those saved segments.

Use segment conditions to save a segment

Once segment conditions are set on the View subscribers screen you can save the segment.

  1. Navigate to the Lists page.
  2. Click the name of the list where you want to create a segment.
  3. Click the Segments drop down and select New Segment.
  4. Set the segment conditions you want to use, then click the Preview Segment button to view the subscribers in the segment.
  5. Once you've selected your criteria click the Save Segment button to save the segment for future use.

You can also click the drop down menu and choose to Send To This Segment or Discover Similar Subscribers.

    Discover Similar Subscribers

  6. In the modal window, give your segment a descriptive name.

    Save segment

  7. Click the Save button to save your segment.

When you name your segment you can choose to have your segment Auto-Update. Leaving the Auto-Update option checked ensures that all subscribers that match your criteria are pulled in to the segment prior to each send. Unchecking the Auto-Update option will create a static segment that only includes the subscribers in the list at the time of creation.

Paste in subscriber addresses to save a segment

Instead of setting segmenting conditions, you can also create a saved segment by pasting in subscriber email addresses. Any saved segment created by pasting in addresses is static and cannot be changed after it's created.

  1. Navigate to the Lists page.
  2. Click the name of the list where you want to create a segment.
  3. Click the Segments drop-down menu and select New Segment.
  4. Click the Or create a segment from a list of emails link.

    Paste in option

  5. Name your segment, right-click, and paste the subscriber email addresses into the Email addresses field. Make sure each email address is separated by a comma, tab, semicolon, or on a separate line.

    Paste in emails

  6. Select if you want to include or exclude the email addresses. Include will create a static segment of only those email addresses that are pasted in, while exclude will create a static segment of all subscribers in the list except those email addresses that are pasted in.
  7. Click the Save Segment button.

View and edit saved segments

You can view any saved segment, but only segments that use auto-update can be edited. If a saved segment is created without using auto-update or created by pasting in addresses, that segment is considered a static segment and can not be edited.

  1. Navigate to the Lists page.
  2. Click the drop down menu for the list and select Manage subscribers

    Manage subscribers

  3. Select the Segments option to open the Segments page.

On this page you can view all saved segments for your list, sort your segments, edit the segmenting criteria, or use the drop down menu to Discover Similar subscribers and Send to a specific segment.

Delete a saved segment

Saved segments can be deleted when you no longer need them. Deleting the segment won't delete subscribers from your list, but you will need to recreate the segment if you'd like to use it again.

  1. Navigate to the Lists page.
  2. Click the drop down menu for the list and select Manage subscribers

    Manage subscribers

  3. Click the Segments option to open the Segments page.
  4. Check the checkbox next to the segment you want to delete.

    Delete segment

  5. Click the Delete button and confirm the deletion in the modal.
