Avoid Word and Publisher to Create Content

This feature requires Author user level or higher.

We don't recommend our users use Word or Publisher to create email campaigns. These applications create additional styling and HTML code that can cause layout problems and delivery issues, like a higher possibility of spam filtering. Plus, once that code's in place, it often can't be changed.

Below, you'll see what kind of messy code Word generates when its converted to HTML.

Behind the Scenes

If you don't know HTML, and need help creating it, we don't recommend using MS Word or Publisher. It's tempting to create a nice looking page in Word, then click the Save As HTML button, but what you get out of it is dangerous code.

For instance, to send a simple HTML message that says, "MailChimp is Cool," where "Cool" is red text.

This is the code you'd use in your HTML email if you did it by hand.

MailChimp is <font color="#FF0000">Cool</font>.

This is the code you'd get if you wrote that in Microsoft Word and Save As HTML.

</html>

That's a whole lot of extra code for a simple sentence. Imagine if you included images, tables, and links. Some ISPs filter spam based on content and code they scan, so all the extra code from Word can get your campaign blocked.

Prevent that Extra Code

To prevent this extra code, use the  Paste from rich text editor icon when you copy your content from Word into a text block. We'll  strip out the junk code and most of the formatting, and paste the useable text content into the editor.

Another option is to create your content in the body of an email in Outlook (not as an attachment), and use the Email Beamer to create a campaign.
