Test with Inbox Preview

Use Inbox Preview to quickly see what your campaign will look like in different email clients and mobile devices, without ever leaving the Campaign Builder.

In this article, you’ll learn how to use Inbox Preview.

Before You Start

Here are some things to know before you begin this process.

  • This article explains how to use Inbox Preview in the Campaign Builder. The same process works in Preview Mode of the Template Builder.
  • Pay As You Go and Forever Free users will receive 10 trial tokens to try out Inbox Preview. Unused tokens expire at the end of the month they were granted, and you’ll need to purchase additional tokens when they run out.

About Inbox Preview

Inbox Preview is a Litmus-powered tool available in Preview Mode. Use it to see campaign screenshots from many different mobile and desktop email clients, like Apple Mail 7, Gmail in Chrome, or Outlook 2011. Test all email clients or just a few, and we’ll deliver the results in Preview Mode.

Why use it?

Every email client displays HTML a little differently. A campaign that looks perfect in Gmail might look different in Outlook 2002.

In your campaign’s Inbox Preview, we’ll let you know which email clients are the most popular for your list. Before you send your campaign, use Inbox Preview to avoid unpleasant surprises, and adapt your designs to work best with your list’s top email clients.

How much does it cost?

 Inbox Preview uses a token system. Each time you successfully create or update a preview, the cost is one token. For example, if you run an Inbox Preview for Outlook 2011, Gmail, and Apple Mail 7, the cost is three tokens. You can purchase tokens in 25-token bundles for $3 per bundle.

MailChimp provides Monthly Plan and MailChimp Pro accounts with a certain number of free tokens. Each billing cycle, MailChimp Pro accounts will receive 1,000 free tokens, and Monthly Plan users receive 25 free tokens.

Unused tokens expire at the end of each billing cycle. The free token balance resets on the billing cycle renewal date, and Monthly Plan and Pro users can purchase additional tokens as needed.

Run an Inbox Preview

To run an Inbox Preview on your campaign, follow these steps.

  1. Navigate to the Design step of the Campaign Builder.
  2. Click the Preview and Test drop-down menu, and choose Enter preview mode.

  3. In Preview Mode, click the Inbox tab.

  4. Click Get Started.

  5. In the Choose clients pane, check the boxes next to the names of the email clients you want to preview. Each email client you choose will cost one token per preview.

    To view which email clients your subscribers prefer, click the blue Top client usage link from your list link. The Inbox Preview top client feature is only available in the Campaign Builder.
  6. After you choose the email clients you want to preview, click Add Clients.

    It may take a minute for your Inbox Preview to load. We’ll display a processing icon next to previews that are in progress.

  7. Click an email client to view its preview.

  8. When you’re done reviewing your previews, click X in the upper-right corner to exit Preview Mode.
  9. Fix any issues you saw with your campaign and run an Inbox Preview update to make sure your campaign looks the way you want. When you’re done, continue through the Campaign Builder.

Update an Inbox Preview

Run an update to refresh Inbox Previews of your draft campaign in various email clients. Each email client you update will cost one token per preview.

To update an Inbox Preview, follow these steps.

  1. Navigate to the Design step of the Campaign Builder.
  2. Click the Preview and Test drop-down menu, and choose Enter preview mode.
  3. In Preview Mode, click the Inbox tab to open Inbox Preview.
  4. Check the the box next to the names of any email clients that you want to see updated previews for.

  5. To refresh the previews, click Update.

  6. After your update loads, click an email client to view its updated preview. To see what the preview for an email client looked like before you updated it, click View history.
