Create a Facebook Ad Campaign with MailChimp

This feature requires Author user level or higher.

Expand your marketing reach with a Facebook ad campaign. We can help you buy and run your ad on Facebook to target an audience beyond your email marketing list. Your ad audience can be subscribers, customers, or Facebook users whose interests align with your services or products.

In this article, you’ll learn how to create, design, and post a Facebook ad campaign through your MailChimp account.
 

Before You Start

Here are some things to know before you begin this process.

  • You'll need Admin user permissions on your Facebook Page to post an ad through MailChimp.

  • MailChimp’s Facebook ad campaigns have a unique billing system. You’ll set your budget and purchase your ad up front. We’ll only charge you for your ad’s total clicks, and we’ll credit back any unused budget.

  • Be sure to review your ad campaign before you send it out. You won’t be able to edit your ad content or budget after you submit it.

  • If your ad doesn’t fit Facebook’s ad requirements for audience and content, Facebook can reject your ad.

  • Please disable ad blockers in your web browser to make sure MailChimp’s Ad Builder runs smoothly.

Create a Facebook Ad Campaign

Ready to create a Facebook ad campaign through MailChimp? You’ll connect to Facebook, and move through three steps of our Ad Builder: Audience, Budget, and Content.

Connect to Facebook

First, you’ll connect your account to Facebook and name your ad campaign.

To start your ad campaign, follow these steps.

  1. Navigate to the Campaigns page.

  2. Click Create Campaign.

  3. In the pop-up modal, input your Campaign name
  4. Click the Campaign type drop-down menu, and choose Facebook ad.

  5. Click Create.

  6. In the Ad Campaign Terms of Use pop-up modal, read the terms and conditions and click I Accept to continue.

  7. Click Edit name, and type the name of your campaign in the pop-up modal. Like regular MailChimp campaign names, this is only for your use and won’t be seen by your audience.

  8. Click Rename to confirm your ad’s name.

  9. In the Facebook page section, click Connect Facebook. Remember, you'll need to be an Admin on the Facebook page you connect.

  10. Input your Facebook login credentials and click Log in. We’ll take you back to the Ad Builder.

  11. Click the Facebook page drop-down menu, and choose the page you want to link the ad to.

  12. Click Save.

Build Your Audience

Next, you’ll move to the Audience step of the Ad Builder to decide who you want to target.

You can target list contacts, people with interests similar to your list contacts, people with interests you define, or even people who have unsubscribed from your mailing list. Remember, inside MailChimp’s Ad Builder, you’re not limited to email subscribers.

To choose an audience, follow these steps.

  1. In the Audience step of the Ad Builder, click Edit Audience.

  2. Choose the audience you want to target: Contacts on a list, People similar to your list contacts, or People with interests you define.

  3. Narrow down your audience based on the selection you made in Step 2.

  • Contacts on a list
    Refine to a MailChimp list, segment, or prebuilt segment
  • People similar to your list contacts
    Refine by audience gender, country, age range, or interest keywords
  • People with interests you define
    Refine by audience gender, country, age range, or interest keywords
  1. Click Save.

Note: Avoid making your audience too narrow. If Facebook determines that your audience size is too small, they will reject your ad. For targeting a list, you'll need a minimum of 100. For targeting a lookalike audience, your audience should have at least 500 contacts.

Set Your Budget and Schedule

Now it’s time to move on to the Budget step of the Ad Builder, where you’ll set your ad’s schedule and daily budget. The bigger your budget, the bigger the audience you can reach.

To set your budget and choose when to run your ad, follow these steps.

  1. In the Budget step of the Ad Builder, click Set Budget.

  2. Use the Start and End drop-down menus to set the ad’s schedule.

    A Facebook ad has a minimum run time of 1 day.

  3. Click the field next to What's the total budget for this ad? and input your maximum daily budget amount.

  4. Click Save.

Design Your Content

And now comes the fun part! It’s time to design your ad in the Content step of our Ad Builder. You can create a simple ad with one static image, or a carousel ad that scrolls through multiple images and their own calls to action.  

To design your Facebook ad, follow these steps.

  1. In the Content step of the Ad Builder, click Add Content.

  2. In the Message section, type a brief message for your ad viewers.

  3. Hover over the Insert an image block, and click Browse Images to open the File Manager.

  4. Choose an image or upload your image to the File Manager, and click Select.

  5. In the Link to field, type the landing page URL where you want your ad viewers to go. This could be a sales page, a video link, or your organization’s donation site. Be sure to avoid using a Facebook page for this field, since this will cause ad rejection.

  6. In the Title field, type a short headline for your ad.

  7. Use the Button drop-down menu to choose a call to action. Choose No button to omit the call to action.

  8. In the Description field, type some copy you want to appear as your offer.  

  9. Optional: click Add Card, and repeat steps 2-8 to create a carousel ad with up to 5 different images.

  10. Click Save and Close.

Right away, you’ll see a preview of your ad.

This is your last chance to review and edit your ad to make sure it’s ready for desktop and mobile Facebook users! Click Edit Content to make any final changes.

Update Billing Information

Before you submit your ad to Facebook, you’ll need to update your billing information. Use the right sidebar in the Ad Builder to make sure your credit card or PayPal information is up-to-date. If you’re using a credit or debit card, we require a CVV code.

Confirm Order

After all three steps of the Ad Builder display a green checkmark, and you’ve double-checked your billing information, your ad is ready to go!

Click Submit Ad at the top of the Ad Builder, and then click Confirm Order to send the ad to Facebook.

Submit to Facebook for Review

After you click confirm, we’ll send your ad to Facebook for review, and email you when the ad is approved and posted to Facebook. The ad will appear as a sponsored ad on your audience’s newsfeeds, and in their Facebook sidebar.

Keep in mind that Facebook has the right to reject any ad for a number of reasons. If this happens, we’ll let you know, and you can update or resubmit your ad later.

Remember, your ad budget will only be debited when the ad is approved and you start getting views on Facebook. If your entire budget isn’t used, you can resubmit the ad or have MailChimp credit the remainder to your account so you can purchase another ad.

Approximately 24 hours after your ad begins running, you’ll see daily results in the Reports section of your MailChimp account. Click the name of your ad campaign to view important statistics like clicks, reach, impressions, and more.
