MailChimp for Salesforce Features

After MailChimp for Salesforce is installed in your Salesforce account, you can use the Query Builder and Campaign Builder to pass specific information from Salesforce into MailChimp, and create MailChimp campaigns inside MailChimp for Salesforce.

Below, you’ll learn about these two features and how to use them.

Query Builder

Queries pass specific contacts, leads, and campaign members stored in Salesforce into a MailChimp list based on filters. The filters allow you to query contacts, leads, and campaign members based on specific fields. It’s possible to run a query immediately or to schedule the query to run daily. The query will function to update existing subscribers and add new subscribers whenever it runs.

Create a Query

  1. Navigate to the MC Setup tab.
  2. Select New Query in the MailChimp Member Queries panel.
Cursor selects the New Query button.
  3. Select a list and any interest groups or segments, and click Next Step.
  4. Select the objects you want to include in the query, and choose your filters for each selected object. Click Next Step.
Shot of objects selected, with cursor clicking Next Step.
  5. Preview the results of the query. Click Previous Steps to make changes or Next Step to continue.
  6. Name your query. The default is List Name - Today's Date. If you are an account administrator and want a query to run regularly, select an hour of the day to run the query.
Screen of query being named and time to run selected.
Click Save to save your changes without running the query, or click Save & Run to save your changes and run the query immediately.

Schedule and Run Queries

If you are a Salesforce account admin, you can schedule queries to run at the same hour each day, along with the hourly sync job.

Schedule a Query

  1. Navigate to the MC Setup tab.
  2. In the MailChimp Member Queries panel, select Schedule for the query you want to edit.
Cursor clicks the Schedule option in the MailChimp Member Queries section.
  3. Select a time from the Run Daily At drop-down menu.
Example of MC Query Name filled in and Run Daily At time selected from the drop-down menu.
Click Save to save your changes without running the query, or click Save & Run to save your changes and run the query immediately.

Manually Run a Query

  1. Navigate to the MC Setup tab.
  2. In the MailChimp Member Queries panel, select Run Query for the query you want to run.
Cursor clicks Run Query in the MailChimp Member Queries section.
Records that are created or modified after the initial query are automatically added to your MailChimp list each time the query is triggered.

Campaign Builder

The MC Campaigns tab allows you to design and send a campaign to your MailChimp list from the MailChimp for Salesforce application.

Below, you’ll learn how to use the Campaign Builder in MailChimp for Salesforce to design and send a campaign.

Things to Know Before You Start

  • You can send to only your entire list, a new segment, or a saved static segment. If you prefer to use Salesforce’s Query Builder to send to segments of your MailChimp list, use the Query Builder to create the segment prior to building your campaign in MailChimp for Salesforce.
  • If you navigate out of the Campaign Builder while creating your campaign, you will no longer have the ability to edit the campaign in MailChimp for Salesforce. To continue editing the campaign, you will need to create a new campaign or log in to your MailChimp account to edit the draft.
  • Drag and drop templates are not currently supported by the MailChimp for Salesforce Campaign Builder. Only classic and custom-coded templates that have been saved in your MailChimp account will be available to create an HTML email. Custom-coded templates must include our template language to be editable within the MailChimp for Salesforce Campaign Builder.
  • MailChimp’s File Manager is not accessible within the MailChimp for Salesforce Campaign Builder. Make sure any images or files you want in the campaign are included in the template in your MailChimp account before you create your campaign in MailChimp for Salesforce.

Create and Send a Campaign

  1. Navigate to the MC Campaigns tab.
  2. Click New in the Recent MC Campaigns panel.
Cursor clicks New button to create a new campaign in the Campaign Builder.
  3. On the Recipients step, select your list from the drop-down menu. Choose to send to your entire list, create a new segment, or choose from a saved static segment. If your MailChimp list doesn’t have a saved static segment, you will not see the Send to a saved segment option.
Cursor selects one of the radio buttons to designate the recipients to send the campaign to.
Click Next in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
Cursor clicks Next to move to the next step of the Campaign Builder.
  4. On the Setup step, input campaign details and any tracking options that you want, and click Next.
  5. On the Content step, click Select for the template you want to use. If you choose a plain-text campaign, you’ll automatically move to the Plain-Text step. To edit the content in a regular campaign, click the section of the template that you want to edit, or select the section from the Change Section drop-down menu.
Cursor selects section from the drop-down menu to edit that section in the Campaign Builder.
When your campaign design is how you want, click Next.
  6. Review the plain-text version of your campaign on the Plain-Text step, and make any changes that you want. Click Next.
  7. On the Confirm step, review the Pre-Delivery Checklist, click Edit if you need to make changes to a section, and preview and test your campaign before it is sent. When everything is how you want, schedule or send your campaign.
Screen of the schedule and send buttons that can be used to send the campaign to the recipients.

All draft and sent campaigns, and segments created in MailChimp for Salesforce will appear in your MailChimp account.
