Remove Inactive Subscribers

To lower your subscriber count and potentially save money on your monthly plan, you might want to remove inactive subscribers from your list. To do this, create a segment of inactive subscribers and remove them in small groups or in bulk.

In this article, you'll learn how to remove inactive subscribers.

Before You Start

Here are some things to know before you begin this process.

  • You may be able to win back the interest of inactive subscribers and earn revenue from them, so it pays to try a re-engagement campaign before you remove them.

  • In this process, you'll move inactive subscribers to the Unsubscribed category of your list. We'll never charge you for unsubscribed addresses, which won't contribute to your Monthly Plan.

Segment and Remove by Campaign Activity

  1. Navigate to the Lists page.
  2. Click the name of the list you want to work with.
  3. Click Create A Segment.
    click create a segment
  4. Choose any or all from the Contacts match drop-down menu.
  5. For the first condition, set the drop-down menus to Campaign Activity | did not open | All of the Last 5 Campaigns, Any of the Last 5 Campaigns, or All Recent Campaigns
  6. Click Add Condition and set the conditions to Campaign Activity | was sent | All of the Last 5 Campaigns, Any of the Last 5 Campaigns, or All Recent Campaigns. This lets you target subscribers who have been sent the campaigns, but haven't opened them.
  7. Click Preview Segment.
  8. Check the box next to each subscriber's email address you want to remove. If you have more inactive subscribers to remove than appear on the page, use the bulk unsubscribe method below.
  9. Click the Actions drop-down menu, and choose Unsubscribe.
    click actions then unsubscribe
  10. On the confirmation pop-up modal, click Confirm.

What about new subscribers?

If you're worried you might remove new subscribers, add a condition to the segment above. Set this second condition to Date Added | is before | a specific date. Choose a date that was before your last campaign or a couple of campaigns ago to protect any new subscribers who haven't received a campaign yet.

Segment and Remove by Member Rating

Another way to remove inactive members is to segment subscribers with low member ratings.

  1. Navigate to the Lists page.
  2. Click the name of the list you want to work with.
  3. Click the Create A Segment.
    click create a segment
  4. Choose any from the Contacts match drop-down menu.
  5. For the first condition, set the drop-down menus to Member Rating | is less than | 2 stars to segment for subscribers with a member rating of one star. This is considered a negative rating.
  6. Click Preview Segment.
  7. Check the box next to each subscriber's email address you want to remove. If you have more inactive subscribers to remove than appear on the page, use the bulk unsubscribe method below.
  8. Click the Actions drop-down menu, and choose Unsubscribe.
  9. On the confirmation pop-up modal, click Confirm.

Remove Subscribers with Bulk Unsubscribe

If you have a lot of subscribers to remove, you can create and export a segment, and then use the bulk unsubscribe feature to remove those addresses from your list.

Complete steps 1-6 above to create your segment. Then, follow these steps to export and unsubscribe the addresses.

  1. View your segment, and click Export Segment.
  2. When the export is finished, click Export as CSV to download a spreadsheet of addresses.
    click export as csv
  3. While you're still in the MailChimp list you're working with, click Manage contacts and choose Unsubscribe addresses.
    click unsubscribe addresses
  4. Open the CSV on your computer, and select and copy all of the email addresses in the spreadsheet.
  5. On the Unsubscribe people page, paste the addresses into the field provided, and click Unsubscribe.
