Add an Unsubscribed Address Back to a List

This feature requires Manager user level or higher.

When a subscriber clicks the unsubscribe link in your MailChimp campaign, the system assumes it was done on purpose and removes them from your list of active subscribers. But we know accidents happen, so if someone unsubscribes in error and wants to resubscribe, use one of these methods to get the subscriber back on your list.

In this article, you’ll learn how to add an unsubscribed email address to your list.

Before You Start

Here are some things to know before you start this process.

  • As an email service provider, MailChimp respects any subscriber's request to be removed from a list. Subscribers who unsubscribe themselves cannot be moved or deleted from the unsubscribed portion of your list. To resubscribe, they need to opt-in through your list signup form or confirmation email.
  • If you bulk unsubscribe addresses for list maintenance purposes, it's possible to re-add those addresses to the active portion of the list.
  • In every case, we recommend you send a reconfirmation campaign for the best list engagement.

Resubscribe with Double Opt-In

When someone who unsubscribed wants to rejoin your list, they should sign up again on your MailChimp-hosted signup form. This form uses the double opt-in process by default, which captures the date and time the subscriber gave you permission to send them emails. This helps establish confirmation that the subscriber wants to join your list.

If someone has contacted you to ask about rejoining your list, send them a link to your signup form to resubscribe.

Resubscribe Email Addresses Manually

If you've manually unsubscribed addresses from your list, you can resubscribe them manually, as well. Subscribers who unsubscribe themselves will need to resubscribe themselves through your signup form.

To manually resubscribe addresses, follow these steps.

  1. Navigate to the Lists page.
  2. Click the name of the list you want to work with.
  3. Click the All Subscribers drop-down menu, and choose Unsubscribed.

Choose to view the Unsubscribed section of your list

  4. Check the box next to the email addresses you want to resubscribe and click the Resubscribe button.

  1. Click the MailChimp Search icon.
  2. Click the Everything drop-down menu and choose Subscribers.
  3. Input the unsubscribed email address and click the Search icon.
  4. Click the View Profile button. On the profile page, click Subscribe.

Resend a Confirmation Email

If someone contacts you to ask why they haven't received a confirmation email or other campaigns, they may need to complete their subscription. When a subscriber requests a confirmation email, you can do so from their subscriber profile. You should only resend a confirmation email if a subscriber has requested it.

To resend a confirmation email from a subscriber's profile page, follow these steps.

  1. On the subscriber profile page, click Resend Confirmation Email.
