Add Subscribers to Groups

This feature requires Manager user level or higher.

Groups help you organize subscribers in your MailChimp list by a common interest or preference, so you can send targeted communications. After you create groups in your list, there are several ways to add subscribers to your groups.

Below, you'll learn how to add and import one or multiple subscribers to groups.

Before You Start

  • To move subscribers into groups, first set up group fields in your MailChimp list. After your groups are set up, add subscribers to groups individually or in bulk.
  • If you choose to import a CSV or Excel file to update subscriber groups, subscribers will only be added to groups and won’t be removed from any groups they are already a member of.
  • If you import a subscriber already on your list and select to update their information, the new import will overwrite information already in your list for that subscriber, with the exception of any groups they are already a member of.

Add Individual Subscribers to Groups

There are three ways to add individual subscribers to groups in MailChimp.

Add Subscriber from the Add Subscriber Page

  1. Navigate to the Lists page.
  2. Click the Add Subscriber icon for the list you want to work with.
Cursor hovers over the add subscriber button for the list.
  3. Type in the subscriber's information.
  4. Choose the group(s) where you want to add the subscribers, and click This person gave me permission to be added to my list.
  5. Click Subscribe.

Add Subscriber from the Subscriber Profile

  1. Navigate to the Lists page.
  2. Click the name of the list you want to work with.
  3. If you see the subscriber you want to edit on the View Subscribers table, click their email address and skip to step 6. If not, click the Search icon to find a subscriber.
  4. Type in a first name, last name, or email address to search for the subscriber, and click the Search icon or press Enter on your keyboard.
  5. Find the subscriber you want to edit, and click View Profile.
  6. Click the Edit button next to the Groups subscribed to heading.
  7. Choose which groups to add the subscriber to, and click Save.

Add Multiple Subscribers to Groups

There are a few ways to add multiple subscribers to groups in MailChimp.

Import Subscribers to the Same Group or Groups

  1. Navigate to the Lists page.
  2. Click the drop-down menu for the list you want to work with, and choose Import.
  3. Click CSV or tab-delimited text file.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Click Browse and choose the file for your group from your computer.
  6. Click the I understand that my billing plan may be automatically upgraded checkbox. Your account will only be upgraded if your import causes your subscriber count to exceed your current billing plan.
  7. Click Next to move on to the Import Subscribers step and match the columns in your import to the columns in your MailChimp list.
  8. Click Save for the Email Address column. We automatically match the column in your import that contains email addresses to the required Email Address field in your list.
  9. On the second column, click Save, or click the drop-down menu to select a different field. To create a new column in your list, choose New Column Name.

The editing pane for each column includes the current column name, field type, and example data from your list, for reference. You can click Skip to move over a column and exclude it from the final import. This will not remove a column that already exists in your list.
  10. Repeat Step 9 for all unmatched columns. You must match or skip all columns to complete your import. We'll display a success message when you've either matched or skipped all your columns.
  11. Click Next.
  12. On the You're all set to import step, review the settings for your import, then scroll down to the Add imported subscribers to these groups section.
  13. Use the checkboxes to select the group or groups you want to import your subscribers to.
  14. Click Import.

After you finish your import, you'll be taken to the View subscribers page for your list. We'll display a status message to show you the progress of your import. We’ll email you when your import is complete.

Import to Multiple Groups

To import individual subscribers to different groups, you’ll add the groups as columns in your import file and then import your list. It’s very important to format your columns to exactly match the columns in your MailChimp list.

To format your import file, follow the steps below.

  1. For each group, add the Group Title as the column name, as it appears in your list. Each Group Title needs its own column.
  2. In the cells under each Group Title, type in the Group Names you want to add each subscriber to. To add a subscriber to multiple groups, separate the Group Titles with a comma.
  3. When you're done, import your file into MailChimp.

Add Subscribers from the Actions Menu

  1. Navigate to the Lists page.
  2. Click the name of the list you want to work with.
  3. Check the box next to each subscriber you want to move into a certain group.
  4. Click the Actions drop-down menu and choose Add to Group.
  5. More drop-down menus will appear. First choose the Group Title, and then the Group Name where you want to add subscribers.
  6. Click Confirm.

Move Segments into Groups

If you created a segment that you would like to use as a group, follow the steps below to add the members of your segment to a group in your list. This action won't delete your segment. If you have greater than several hundred subscribers, it may be faster to export your list and use one of the import methods mentioned above.

  1. Navigate to the Lists page.
  2. Click the name of the list you want to work with.
  3. Click the Segments drop-down menu and select the segment you want to use or create a new segment.
  4. Check the boxes next to each subscriber you want to add to the group. Click the arrow above the checkboxes, and choose Select Visible to select the subscribers who appear on the table for that page.
  5. Click the Actions drop-down menu and select Add to Group.
  6. More drop-down menus will appear. First choose the Group Title, and then the Group Name where you want to add subscribers.
  7. In the Are you sure? modal, click Confirm to add your subscribers to the group or click Cancel.

To select subscribers on multiple pages, repeat steps 4–7 for each page.
